The Man Behind the Science
Prof. Zacharias Tanee Fomum was born on June 20, 1945, in Wumnembug, Cameroon, to Solomon Fomum Tanee (a Presbyterian minister) and Rebecca Angum. From childhood, his household emphasized academic excellence and disciplined living.
He obtained his B.A. with First Class Honors from Fourah Bay College, University of Sierra Leone (1969), and his Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from the University of Makerere, Uganda (1973) under the supervision of Professor Stephen R. Landor.
As a Professor of Organic Chemistry at the University of Yaoundé I from 1975, he specialized in heterocyclic compound synthesis and natural product isolation from tropical medicinal plants. He became the world's leading authority on the Erythrina plant genus.
In 2005, the University of Durham, Great Britain, awarded him a Doctor of Science (D.Sc.) in recognition of his distinct contributions to scientific knowledge — making him the first Cameroonian to ever receive this honor.
