The Scientific Legacy of Prof. ZTF: A Giant of African Chemistry
How Prof. Zacharias Tanee Fomum reshaped organic chemistry research in Africa and trained a global generation of scientists.
A Life Dedicated to Science and Faith
Prof. Zacharias Tanee Fomum (1945–2009) stands as one of the most accomplished scientists ever produced by Africa. Born on June 20, 1945, in Wumnembug, North-West Cameroon, he rose to become a Full Professor of Organic Chemistry at the University of Yaoundé I and one of the most cited chemists on the African continent.
Academic Achievements
His academic journey took him from Fourah Bay College in Sierra Leone (First Class BSc, 1969) to Makerere University in Uganda (PhD, Organic Chemistry, 1973), and ultimately to the University of Durham in Great Britain, which awarded him the prestigious Doctor of Science (D.Sc.) degree in 2005 — the first Cameroonian ever to receive this distinction.
155+ Publications
Prof. ZTF authored and co-authored over 155 peer-reviewed publications in internationally recognized scientific journals, covering heterocyclic synthesis, natural product isolation, and the pharmacological properties of Cameroonian medicinal plants.
100+ Scientists Trained
Perhaps his most enduring legacy is the generation of scientists he trained. Over 100 doctoral and master's researchers were supervised under his guidance, many of whom now lead research centers, university departments, and scientific programs across Africa and the world.
